In implementation of the curriculum prepared by the Dean's Office of the College of Health and Medical Technologies, the Department of Medical Laboratory Technologies—in cooperation with the Departments of University Psychological Guidance and Student Activities—organized a scientific workshop titled "Mature White Blood Cells and Their Laboratory Identification" at 10:00 AM on Sunday, October 26, 2025. The workshop featured the participation of:
-
Lecturer Dr. Alaa Kazim Hameed – Chair
-
Lecturer Dr. Hiba Mohammed Abdul-Wahid – Speaker
-
Assistant Lecturer Rawad Majid Kamil – Rapporteur
The workshop addressed the process of hematopoiesis within the bone marrow, wherein hematopoietic stem cells give rise to white blood cells (leukocytes), red blood cells (erythrocytes), and platelets (thrombocytes). Leukocytes are synthesized in the bone marrow and distributed throughout the bloodstream and lymphatic tissue as a vital component of the immune system, responsible for defending the body against infections and diseases.
Furthermore, the workshop outlined the laboratory differentiation of mature leukocytes using a Complete Blood Count (CBC) with differential. This procedure involves microscopic evaluation of stained peripheral blood smears to determine the percentages of the five primary leukocyte types. Specialized differential stains are utilized to identify and characterize cells based on their morphological features, including nuclear shape, cytoplasmic characteristics, and cellular size.
