In implementation of the curriculum approved by the Dean's Office of the College of Health and Medical Technologies, the Department of Medical Laboratory Technologies—in cooperation with the Departments of University Psychological Guidance and Student Activities—organized a scientific seminar titled "Recent Advances in Gene Editing Technologies: Applications of CRISPR-Cas in Medicine and Agriculture" at 12:00 PM on Sunday, November 23, 2025. The seminar featured the participation of:
-
Assistant Lecturer Rawad Majid Kamil – Session Chair
-
Assistant Lecturer Taiba Shaker Hassan – First Speaker
-
Assistant Lecturer Kholoud Aayed Hussein – Second Speaker
-
Assistant Lecturer Sally Basim Talib – Rapporteur
The seminar reviewed the latest advancements in CRISPR-Cas technology used for high-precision gene editing, explaining its mechanism based on the Cas9 enzyme and guide RNA (gRNA) for DNA modification. It highlighted key medical applications, such as treating genetic disorders, developing cancer immunotherapies, and combating viral infections. Additionally, the seminar covered major agricultural applications, including crop improvement, enhancing resistance to drought and diseases, and optimizing livestock traits. The participants emphasized the necessity of adhering to ethical and regulatory guidelines to mitigate risks associated with genetic modification and ensure the safe deployment of the technology.
